Portal 2
Portal 2 is an action adventure puzzle blockbuster game developed on April 11, 2011 by Valve Corporation. It is a sequel to the original game Portal. It was released on Microsoft, OS X, PlayStation 3 and on the Xbox 360. Portal 2 challenge players to complete and traverse obstacle courses (test chambers) in order to proceed through the game. Portal 2 introduces much more scientific content from the original game, including laser redirection cubes, bridges made of light, tractor beams and paint-like 'gels' that increase the player's speed, jump boost or turns surfaces into portal surfaces, as well as showing a lot of backstory towards Aperture Science. You play as the main protagonist Chell who has woken up after several thousand years in suspended animation, navigating herself through Aperture Science's Enrichment Centre using the world-famous Portal Gun (Aperture's Handheld Portal Device). The whole facility is also being reconstructed by the repowered antagonist supercomputer GLaDOS (Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System)(voiced by Ellen McLain). You are also being accompanied by Wheatley (Stephen Merchant), a personality core who apparently is a 'moron' as he is technically an intelligence deafening sphere, designed to be a tumor that produces an endless stream of terrible ideas. The game also has a cooperative mode which allows you to play with a second player online, both exploring Aperture's Cooperative Testing Initiative as two robotic pals named P-Body and Atlas. You can also download the Peer Review DLC, which gives the player challenge modes, leaderboards, short clip tutorials, individual test playthroughs and the Perpetual Testing Initiative (Puzzle Creator) which allows players to design, play and publish their own test chambers on the Steam
Workshop (not included on console versions).
Story
You wake up after several thousand years in suspended animation in the nearly abandoned Aperture Science. You go out your front door of your cryosleep chamber and meet Wheatley, a intelligence deafening sphere who was originally attached to GLaDOS as a tumor to slow her down. He then directs you through the abandoned cryosleep facility and brings you into abandoned test chambers, overrun with plants and rubbish. After a few tests, you and Wheatley and sent into GLaDOS' chamber. Luckily she is powered down as you defeated her at the end of the first game. You will then try to find an escape pod in the Breaker room under GLaDOS' chamber, and you plug Wheatley in to the main machine to turn the lights on. But instead, Wheatley sends both of you up to GLaDOS' chamber again, while pulling all the power levers as you go up. Once you get to the top, you see that you've accidentally powered GLaDOS back up. She then grabs both you and Wheatley, and chucks you down an incinerator and Wheatley away, broken. Then she forces you to complete lots of tests 'like old times'. Then in the twenty-first chamber, Wheatley busts you out. You then sabotage the turret process line and the neurotoxin generator so she can't hurt you. You then find her new and improved chamber and confront her. She tries to kill you with turrets and neurotoxin, but these both fail as you sabotaged them. You then agree to a core transfer between GLaDOS and Wheatley. Wheatley in then put in control of the whole facility, and calls an escape lift for you. But before you go, Wheatley goes mad with power and asks you to stay, while humiliating GLaDOS by putting her A.I. in a potato battery. GLaDOS then reminds Wheatley that he's a moron, then Wheatley gets so mad that he smashes both you and GLaDOS underground into the old facilities. You then make your way through lots of enrichment tests, while learning about Cave Johnson, the founder of Aperture Science and his loving assistant Caroline. You also find out about the Repulsion, Propulsion and Conversion gels as you travel. Then luckily you make your way back to the upper layers of Aperture, where Wheatley is struggling trying to get cube-turret hybrids to solve tests. GLaDOS then tries a shutdown paradox on Wheatley, but fails. Wheatley then states that he needs them to solve some tests as it feels good when he does test and he gets a horrible itch when he doesn't test. Then, you can the see the horrible work Wheatley has put into the facility, as it is about to explode. After several test chambers, Wheatley attempts to kill you, but luckily you escape, several times. You then make you way to Wheatley's 'lair', where he says he needs to kill you as the facility will explode in six minutes, and he needs time to figure out how to stop it. Thankfully, you defeat him and try to perform another core transfer. But when you try to press the stalemate resolution button to stop it, you find out that Wheatley has booby-trapped the button with bombs, so he blows you up, almost killing you, but then the roof cracks open, revealing the Moon. You shoot a portal onto the Moon, sucking you and Wheatley into space. The space core then flies into space to fulfill his desires, while GLaDOS goes back into her body and shoves Wheatley into space, while saving you. She then figures out that she is Caroline, then deletes her from her memory. She then lets you go, while the turrets sing for you.
Backstory
The journey of Portal began in the 1930s when a man named Cave Johnson started a company known as Aperture Fixtures, which was a factory which produced shower curtains for the military. The company was such a success that by the 1940s Cave Johnson had become a billionaire. He then bought a large salt mine which he used for the enrichment centres underground. By the 1950s Cave had completely sorted out all the underground facilities. Then he and several other workers produced the repulsion and propulsion gels using different elements and chemicals. However, they discovered an unknown element in the gels which apparently ‘does not like the human skeleton’. Then they put the repulsion gel (named Repulsion Pudding) in markets as a dietetic pudding substitute. This got removed from shelves when a lot of complaints stated that when they consumed the gel the other food they had eaten would bounce out of their stomachs and out their mouths. Then they put the propulsion gel (named Propulsion Pudding) on the markets. This also got pulled from shelves when people consumed it and were unable to digest other food as it was speeding along their stomach layers. Then they basically decided to retarget the gels and decided to use them in enrichment tests instead. Then in the 1970s Cave Johnson bought $70,000,000 worth of moon rocks from space. He then grounded them up and mixed them into a third gel called the Conversion Gel. Cave then got deathly ill from being exposed to the dust from the moon rocks, as it is 'pure poison'. By then he had started to produce the Handheld Portable Quantum Tunneling Device (Portal Gun). He then found out that moon rocks make great portal conductors, so he put the gel in the enrichment tests as well. He then thought that the new portals would be able to leech the lunar poison out of his bloodstream so he would be healthy again, but obviously this failed. Then he got his lab boys to start working on artificial intelligence so that his intelligence and personality could be downloaded into a computer before he died, because he knew this was his only option besides death. He then stated that if he died before the A.I. and downloading systems were ready he wanted Caroline, his assistant and lover to run the place. In the 1990s, sadly Cave Johnson did die, but a few years later the A.I. programming was ready at that point. From Cave's instructions, Caroline’s intelligence and personality was then downloaded onto the main computer (GLaDOS). Once she was turned on, she immediately became more violent and evil. She then locked all the facility doors and turned on a blast of neurotoxin which killed everyone in the facility but one. His name was Doug Rattmann (Rat Man). He somehow hid from GLaDOS until the test subjects were allowed in. This was when Chell came in. Rat Man then hacked into the testing software and put Chell at the top so that hopefully she could find a way to defeat GLaDOS. This was when Portal started. As we all know, Chell did defeat GLaDOS. She was then put into cryosleep when she was dragged back in like the other 10,000 or so test subjects. Rat Man then hacked into the power system and put Chell’s cryosleep chamber in the reserved power grid in case GLaDOS powered back up again. She is then asleep for 20,000 to 50,000 years while the other 10,000 or so test subjects likely perished. She then awakes and this is where Portal 2 starts.
Game Mechanics
Portal Gun - The Portal Gun is a device made out of a miniature black hole, cooling fans and lots of metallic substances. It allows the player to shoot portals onto white portal surfaces, allowing the player to 'teleport' their ways through tests.
Weighted Storage Cube - The weighted storage cube is a large cube that the player can pick up and place onto buttons or onto other surfaces. They can also get coated in gels.
Edgeless Safety Cube - The edgeless safety cube is a round ball which can be used to activate round buttons. It can be picked up and kicked around, and it mainly appears in the Cooperative Testing Initiative.
Frankenturret - The frankenturret is a hybrid of a cube and two turrets made by Wheatley when he was in control to solve tests. The hybrid has two legs, two turret heads and it is coming out of a cube.
Super Collided Weighted Super Button - The super collided weighted super button is a large red button that can be activated by either the player standing on it or a weighted cube. It is used to activate objects.
Material Emancipation Grill - The material emancipation grill is like a security device, which is like a light blue barrier (you can walk through it), which deletes all portals produced by the portal gun going through it, and also vaporizes objects that go through it, except the player, the portal gun, PotatOS and Wheatley.
Goo - The goo is a brown water like substance that instantly kills the player if they fall into it. It acts like acid towards the player, objects and gels.
Portal Spawner - The portal spawner is a machine that instantly creates a certain type of portal for you. It is mainly used in the first two chapters when you don't have the portal gun or only have the single portal device.
Thermal Discouragement Beam - The thermal discouragement beam is a red laser that hurts the player when they touch it. It is used to activate laser switches. It can be redirected using the laser redirection cube and can be stopped by any other cube.
Laser Field - The laser field is a barrier made out of lasers that automatically kills the player if they touch it. It can be turned off by certain switches.
Sentry Turret - The sentry turret is a oval-shaped robot with one red eye and three legs. It shoots any moving target, including you. It has a red light beam coming out of it's eye to aim at its prey. It will shut down when it is picked up and thrown or when it is knocked over.
Aerial Faith Plate - The aerial faith plate is a floor device that launches the player a certain height and width. It is used to get across gaps and to get more air when you fall then fling through portals.
Hard Light Bridge - The hard light bridge is a light blue translucent bridge made out of pure sunlight pumped in from the surface. It can be moved using portals and is endless unless stopped by a solid. It is used as a platform for the player and certain objects.
Excursion Funnel - The excursion funnel is a swirling light blue tractor beam that can push away the player and objects in it's beam. It can also change direction and colour, so it pulls the player and objects towards it in it's orange grasp. It can also be moved using portals.
Repulsion Gel - The repulsion gel is a light blue substance that increases the height of the player's jump when they jump on it. It can also launch the player higher depending on how high they fall before they land on it. If it is put in front of a line of propulsion gel, the player will bounce much farther. Like the name, it also repels objects.
Propulsion Gel - The propulsion gel is a light orange substance that increases the player's speed when they run on it. Depending on the length of the gel splats, that is how fast you run. It is used to make the player zoom over gaps and get past hazards quicker. Like the name, it also propels objects.
Conversion Gel - The conversion gel is a white substance that, like the name, converts non-portal surfaces into portal surfaces. It can be used on nearly any surface. It is made of ground moon rocks.
Cleansing Gel - The cleansing gel is basically running water which, like the name, cleanses a surface with gel so that the gel is washed off.
